Banks have so far approved applications for 584 mortgages subsidised under the "Spiti Mou (My Home) 2" programme during its first month, for the total sum of 65 million euros, according to figures released by the Hellenic Developmental Bank, which is responsible for managing the programme.
Interest in the programme continues to be especially strong, with 120,000 people submitting their details for consideration, while the programme aims to help approximately 20,000 households to buy their first home on favourable terms.
Based on the initial results, the second version of the programme has mainly benefited low and middle-income households, as the average annual income of the approved beneficiaries does not exceed 21,300 euros.
The residences selected for purchase have an average size of 91.5 square metres, indicating that many of the participants are seeking a family home, while seven in 10 approved applications involve married couples and single-parent families.
The second round of the programme is also open to older beneficiaries up to 50 years old, whereas the first edition was limited to people up to 39, and this is reflected in an increase of the average age of those receiving loans to 38 years old.
Most loans were approved in the Athens and Thessaloniki areas, while 46% of approved loans were submitted outside the two largest cities.
