A 50-year-old Greek woman is stranded in Turkey awaiting trial after being accused of theft in Istanbul. The woman was detained by Turkish police on November 22nd following an alleged incident where a shop owner's phone was stolen.
She was shopping for headscarves with her 22-year-old daughter and a friend to enter Hagia Sophia.
Although the shop owner has since withdrawn his complaint, believing a mistake was made, the woman remains in Turkey facing a trial that could take months.
Her husband has appealed to the Greek government to intervene and secure her return to Greece.
The woman's daughter was also detained and deported after three days without her mother being notified.
The Greek Foreign Ministry is monitoring the situation and has confirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of Greek citizens abroad, though it emphasized that it does not intervene in judicial matters of other countries.
