The cancellation of a concert by Greek singer Despina Vandi in Turkey has sparked a heated debate.

Ms. Vandi withdrew from the event, organised by Turkey's Education Foundation (TEV), claiming it had taken on "political connotations" which she had not agreed to.

TEV's president, Gülnur Soybayraktar, suggested the cancellation was due to the presence of posters of Turkey's founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and Turkish flags. Cesme's mayor, Lâl Denizli, echoed these claims.

Ms. Vandi did not specifically mention flags or posters in her statement, but she emphasised the event's deviation from its original entertainment purpose.

As a result, the concert was replaced with a performance by the TEV chorus, including a nationalist anthem.
