An inclusive society cannot be exclusive in terms of rights, especially for children, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou said on Monday, commenting on the same-sex marriage bill.
The president was asked to comment on the issue, as the main opposition has filed a bill in parliament and the government is expected to file another soon.
"Society evolves, it moves ahead," Sakellaropoulousaid. "In an inclusive society, there are no exceptions in rights, especially when it relates to children."
At a meeting with the press at the Presidential Mansion, Sakellaropoulou, a lawyer by training, noted that she had spoken of an inclusive society from the very start of her presidential term. She also underlined that her role is to unite, and when society is moving ahead the state has the obligation to listen to that.
Earlier, the president and the press paid a visit to an exhibition space set up by her in the Mansion with gifts made to her as president by authorities, individuals, and citizens that belong to the state and are managed by the presidency.
Objects include a painting by a 14-year-girl on the war in Ukraine, presented to Sakellaropoulou by the country's president Volodymyr Zelensky, and an ornate vase, a gift by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his recent visit to Greece.
