Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York on Tuesday, emphasizing Greece's growing role in international diplomacy.
Mr. Gerapetritis described Greece’s recent election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council as a “significant moment” for the country, especially during a challenging period for the world.
Following the meeting, Mr. Gerapetritis spoke with reporters and outlined Greece’s stance on key global issues, including the war in Ukraine, the Middle East conflict, and the Cyprus problem.
On Ukraine, he reiterated Greece’s commitment to international law and territorial integrity.
“Greece has consistently maintained a principled position. We seek a solution that aligns with international law and respects Ukraine’s sovereignty. Our stance, alongside our European partners, reflects this direction,” he said.
Regarding the Middle East, Mr. Gerapetritis highlighted the importance of the recent ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon and the need for a political resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
“We discussed the expectations arising from the ceasefire, the next steps required, and the importance of adhering to the truce agreement.
This includes the release of all hostages and the eventual reconstruction of Gaza, allowing people to return to their homes. A political solution must also involve the creation of a Palestinian state,” he said.
The Cyprus issue was also a key topic of discussion. Mr. Gerapetritis and Mr. Guterres discussed an upcoming expanded meeting on Cyprus and organizational and structural reforms within the UN.
Mr. Gerapetritis noted that Greece’s upcoming presidency of the Security Council in May will include a series of events aimed at addressing global challenges.
“Greece is at the forefront of international diplomacy, leaving a strong imprint based on principles,” Mr. Gerapetritis said. “We are a country that supports international law, engages in dialogue with all parties, and serves as a bridge between East and West, North and South. We will remain at the forefront of international events, offering our services and strengthening Greece’s global presence.”
Mr. Gerapetritis’s visit to New York underscores Greece’s active role in addressing global crises, from armed conflicts to humanitarian challenges, while positioning itself as a key player in international diplomacy.
