Greece’s Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, held a high-level meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Deputy Treasury Secretary Mike Falkender in Washington as part of his visit for the International Monetary Fund Spring Meetings.
The discussions centered on attracting U.S. investments in emerging sectors within Greece, enhancing bilateral economic cooperation, and advancing artificial intelligence initiatives.
The meeting underscored strong American interest in the Greek economy, which was highlighted at the IMF summit as a positive economic narrative amid global uncertainty.
Despite Secretary Bessent’s busy schedule, partly due to ongoing renegotiations of trade deals during a temporary U.S. tariff suspension, the meeting with Mr. Pierrakakis was given priority, reflecting Washington’s attention to Greece’s economic trajectory.
Greek officials are closely monitoring the unfolding EU-U.S. trade negotiations to determine the possibility of securing exemptions for Greek exports to the United States.
The meeting at the U.S. Treasury occurred shortly after Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ remarks to Breitbart News regarding transatlantic tariffs, comments that were reportedly well-received in Washington as encouraging a constructive European approach to U.S.-EU trade relations.
