Greek authorities are closely monitoring mild seismic and volcanic activity in the Santorini caldera following a recent increase in activity.
The heightened activity prompted a meeting at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection to discuss the implementation of the "TALOS 2" emergency response plan, designed to manage the impact of any potential volcanic event.
According to a ministry statement, the Permanent Scientific Committee for Monitoring the Hellenic Volcanic Arc has detected increased activity along the central fault of Kameni in the northern part of the caldera. Scientists are analyzing data and updating preventive measures as needed.
The ministry noted the current activity is similar to that observed in 2011-2012, which lasted approximately 14 months without an eruption.
Experts currently believe there is no immediate cause for concern, based on the available data.
The meeting included Deputy Minister for Natural Disaster Recovery Christos Triantopoulos, General Secretary for Local Government Savvas Chionidis, General Secretary for Civil Protection Vasilios Papageorgiou, Fire Service Chief Theodoros Vagias, Thira Mayor Nikolaos Zorzos, South Aegean Regional Vice Governor Georgios Leontaritis, and leading scientists from institutions such as the Geodynamic Institute, the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (EAGME), and the Organization for Antiseismic Planning and Protection (OASP).
