Greece is embarking on the most significant overhaul of its Armed Forces in modern history, Defense Minister Nikos Dendias announced, outlining sweeping reforms aimed at bolstering national defense, modernizing equipment, and streamlining operations.
Speaking at a New Democracy event in Katerini, Mr. Dendias emphasized that the country must embrace cutting-edge defense technologies while strengthening its domestic industry.
He pointed to the newly established Hellenic Center for Defense Innovation, which will develop drones, anti-drone systems, and advanced communication networks. “We cannot rely on foreign-made systems alone.
Our defense investments must also fuel Greece’s economy and future generations,” he said.
The minister revealed plans for a landmark 10+10-year defense procurement program to be presented to Parliament on March 4, marking the first long-term military strategy in Greece’s history.
He underscored the importance of transparency, stating, that “Every Greek citizen has the right to know where their taxes go and how we are transforming our Armed Forces.”
Mr. Dendias also detailed the “Shield of Achilles,” a five-tiered air defense system designed to protect against missiles, drones, aircraft, naval threats, and submarines. Inspired by the legendary armor of Greek mythology, he described it as essential to safeguarding the homeland.
Greece’s military overhaul includes a restructuring of its armed forces, with Dendias calling the current system “unsustainable.”
He noted that Greece once maintained nearly 830 military bases—more than the U.S.—and pledged to streamline operations while ensuring greater efficiency.
Investing in personnel remains a priority, with the government launching the largest military housing program in Greece’s history, along with salary and rank reforms. “Even the most advanced technology is useless without the people operating it,” Mr. Dendias said.
The minister also highlighted Greece’s expanding role in defense diplomacy, referencing Operation “Shields,” which aims to protect global trade routes vital to the Greek economy.
