The summer of 2024 was the hottest on record in Greece since temperatures began to be recorded scientifically.
Preliminary data from the National Observatory of Athens' Meteo weather service confirmed what residents and visitors experienced: scorching temperatures throughout June, July, and August, exceeding the average for those months.
The average daily temperature was a striking 2.9 degrees Celsius higher than the 1991-2020 period and even surpassed the previous record-breaking summer of 2021 by 1 degree Celsius.
Both June and July 2024 were the hottest ever recorded, while August 2024 came in as the second hottest, only behind August 2021. Western and northern Greece were particularly hard hit, experiencing temperature increases of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius compared to the 1991-2020 average.
In fact, no region in Greece saw a temperature difference less than 1.4 degrees Celsius higher than the 1991-2020 period.
