Amidst escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon, Greece has deployed the frigate "Elli" to the eastern Mediterranean in preparation for possible evacuations of foreign nationals.
This action follows the Greek Foreign Ministry's urgent call for all Greek citizens to leave Lebanon immediately, along with a travel advisory against visiting the country.
The "Elli" is currently participating in a United Nations operation in the region but is prepared to assist with evacuation efforts if requested. There are an estimated 3,000 Greek nationals residing in Lebanon.
News reports suggest that Israel may launch a ground operation in Lebanon, raising concerns for civilian safety. This has prompted heightened alert at airports and ports in Cyprus. The UK has also announced the deployment of 700 troops to Cyprus to assist with the potential evacuation of British citizens from Lebanon.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that the conflict has already claimed over 600 lives and displaced at least 90,000 people within Lebanon.
