Greece is on track to deploy a sophisticated air defense system, similar to Israel's renowned "Iron Dome," by 2026.
Deputy Defense Minister Giannis Kefalogiannis confirmed the project's progress, emphasizing its defensive purpose and strategic importance for Greece's national security.
Kefalogiannis outlined the system's capabilities, highlighting its ability to counter a wide range of aerial threats, including drones, ballistic missiles, and aircraft.
The system will also provide anti-ship capabilities, offering comprehensive protection across both air and sea domains.
Responding to criticism from Turkey, which has labeled the project a provocation, Kefalogiannis reiterated Greece's commitment to defensive measures.
"When there is an illegal casus belli from Turkey against our country, it is our duty to safeguard our sovereign rights," he stated, emphasizing the need for preparedness in a volatile region.
The new defense system will provide comprehensive coverage from Evros to Kastellorizo, significantly enhancing Greece's ability to protect its territory and deter potential aggression.
The project reflects Greece's proactive approach to national security amid a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
