Deputy Foreign Minister Tasos Hatzivasileiou, during a visit to Odessa, emphasized Greece's unwavering support for Ukraine and called for the European Union to develop its own military capability.
In an interview from Ukraine, Mr. Hatzivasileiou detailed discussions with Ukrainian officials on ceasefire efforts, reconstruction plans, and Ukraine’s EU integration.
Representing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, Mr. Hatzivasileiou attended a reception hosted by the Greek Consulate in Odessa, marking Greece’s Independence Day.
“From the outset, Greece has stood by Ukraine against Russia’s unprovoked and illegal invasion.Our priority is securing a sustainable peace,” he said.
He conveyed Greece's support for strengthening Ukraine’s military and its readiness to assist in post-war reconstruction, highlighting Greek expertise in energy and infrastructure.
Mr. Hatzivasileiou discussed deepening trade ties and invited Ukrainian entrepreneurs to explore investment opportunities in Greece.

He praised the resilience of the Ukrainian people and their military readiness, but also noted the severe damage to infrastructure and the urgent need for reconstruction.
The Need for a European Defense Arm
Echoing calls from Prime Minister Mitsotakis and French President Emmanuel Macron, Mr. Hatzivasileiou stressed the necessity of EU strategic autonomy.
“The EU must develop a defense pillar—not for waging wars, but to complement NATO and protect European values,” he stated, welcoming recent EU defense cooperation efforts.
Mr. Hatzivasileiou reaffirmed Greece’s support for Ukraine’s EU membership bid, acknowledging the necessary reforms.
“Culturally, socially, and economically, Ukraine belongs in Europe. Greece stands ready to provide technical assistance,” he said.
He expressed deep emotion at the warmth of the Greek community in Odessa and Mariupol, vowing Greece's continued support for both its diaspora and Ukraine.
