Greece has announced ambitious plans to build a cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) facility, joining other European nations in a bid to become a leader in AI technology.
The "AI Factory," will focus on developing advanced AI models to solve challenges in healthcare, cultural preservation, and environmental sustainability.
This initiative is part of a broader European Commission program to establish AI Factories across the continent.
The hubs will be powered by supercomputers and vast amounts of data, fostering collaboration and innovation in the field of AI. Greece's proposal will be anchored by the country's supercomputer "Daedalus."
The AI Factory will analyze anonymized health data to predict and prevent chronic diseases, personalize treatments, and improve healthcare delivery. It will also use AI to preserve the Greek language and cultural heritage, creating new opportunities for research, education, and artistic expression. Finally, the facility will develop AI-powered solutions for renewable energy management and environmental monitoring, using data from Greece's national micro-satellite program to respond to climate-related events.
Dimitris Papastergiou, Greece's Minister of Digital Governance, emphasized the importance of a citizen-centered approach to AI development, stating that "This is a national effort that will position Greece as a key player in Europe's emerging AI ecosystem."
The Greek AI Factory will be supported by leading research institutions like Demokritos, NTUA, and the Athena Research Center. It aims to become a central hub for businesses and organizations seeking to develop and utilize AI technology, driving innovation and economic growth in Greece.
