Greece is on high alert today as a dangerous mix of soaring temperatures and powerful winds significantly increases the risk of wildfires across the country.
The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has warned of gale-force northerly winds, particularly in the central and southern Aegean Sea, creating what authorities are calling an "explosive" situation.
Temperatures are expected to reach scorching levels, with highs of up to 41 degrees Celsius in some parts of the mainland and strong winds gusting up to 8 Beaufort in the Aegean.
The conditions have placed eight regions of Greece on "orange" alert, signifying a very high wildfire risk.
The areas facing the most critical threat include Attica, Kythira, Euboea, Boeotia, Phthiotis, Argolis, Corinthia, Laconia, Halkidiki, Evros, the northern Aegean islands, and the Cyclades. Authorities are urging residents and visitors in these regions to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant for any signs of fire.
