Greece is bracing for its coldest day of the winter as Storm Coral brings freezing temperatures and snow across the country.

Meteorologists warn that Saturday will be the coldest day, with frigid air sweeping in from northeastern Europe and the Black Sea region.

"Saturday will be the coldest day, with temperatures dropping significantly," said Theodoros Kolydas, director of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY). "Snowfall will not be limited to mountainous areas; some lower-altitude regions will also see snow."

Christina Riga, a meteorologist at Mega TV, described the cold as "bitter" and likely to persist until Monday.

"Saturday will be the coldest day and night of this winter, with single-digit temperatures across most areas," she said. "The wind chill will make it feel even colder."

Klearchos Marousakis, a meteorologist at Open TV, said the cold spell will continue, with rain expected to replace the freezing conditions by Monday. He added that northern Greece will experience the most extreme cold, with temperatures plunging to between -8 and -12 degrees Celsius (-17.6 and 10.4 Fahrenheit).

The cold snap has disrupted daily life across the country, with authorities urging residents to take precautions against the freezing conditions.
