Greece is bracing for a sharp drop in temperatures and potential snowfall as an Arctic air mass moves into the country.
Forecasters predict temperatures could plummet by at least 10 degrees Celsius (18 Fahrenheit) compared to recent highs, with the cold snap lasting through the weekend.
Meteorologist Giannis Kallianos of Mega TV said the cold front will arrive in northern Greece on Tuesday and spread south by Wednesday.
He noted Attica, the region around Athens, will see temperatures begin to fall Wednesday, with highs of only 6 to 8 degrees Celsius (43 to 46 Fahrenheit) Thursday through Saturday. Northern suburbs could see highs of just 3 to 4 degrees Celsius (37 to 39 Fahrenheit).
Snow is possible in parts of Attica, including the Athens basin. Klearchos Marousakis of OPEN TV said there is an 80% chance of significant snowfall across Attica from Wednesday night through Thursday morning, lasting until midday Friday.
He cited a combination of low pressure, humidity, and cold temperatures as creating unstable conditions. He added there is a 20% chance the system could shift eastward, leading to milder weather.
The weather system is also expected to bring increased cloud cover and localized rain, with heavier showers in Thrace.
Sporadic thunderstorms are possible in the southern and eastern islands. Snowfall is predicted for northern mainland areas, starting in the mountains and spreading to lower elevations by evening.
Winds are forecast to be northerly at 3 to 5 Beaufort, reaching 6 Beaufort in the northeast. In the eastern Aegean, winds will be southerly at 3 to 5 Beaufort.
Residents are advised to prepare for potential disruptions to travel and daily life due to the cold, snow, and strong winds. Authorities are monitoring the situation.
