Greece is intensifying its wildfire prevention efforts, focusing on vegetation clearing and firebreak expansion, as it prepares for the upcoming summer fire season.
A high-level meeting at the Civil Protection Ministry, led by Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Giannis Kefalogiannis, addressed the progress of prevention projects and coordination between key agencies, including the Forest Management Department, power grid operators, the Armed Forces, and the Fire Service.
"We are in the final phase of preparations," Mr. Kefalogiannis said, highlighting the strengthened Fire Service, now with 18,000 personnel.
Priorities include expanding firebreaks in areas managed by power grid operators, with support from the Armed Forces.
The "Antinero" program, a €580 million initiative for large-scale land clearing, is a crucial part of these efforts.
The minister emphasized the role of power grid operators in prevention, noting significant investments in network maintenance and efforts to bury power lines in high-risk areas.
Property owners were reminded of their obligation to clear vegetation, with warnings of strict inspections and fines.
"Last year, we had 830,000 plots cleared. This year, we aim to exceed that number," Mr. Kefalogiannis stated.
Beyond land clearing, the "Aegis" program is boosting firefighting capabilities with aerial units and drones.
The urgency of these measures is underscored by 3,000 wildfires recorded in Greece during the first three months of 2025, highlighting the impact of climate change. "Even outside the official fire season, we are seeing hundreds of incidents," Mr. Kefalogiannis said, urging collective action.
