Greece and the United States have strengthened their energy ties following a phone call between Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou and U.S. Interior Secretary and National Energy Dominance Council Chairman Doug Burgum.
The officials discussed strategic energy cooperation, focusing on Greece's acceptance of Chevron's interest in offshore blocks "South Crete I and II." Both agreed the move signifies a significant step in deepening bilateral relations.
Doug Burgum, who also chairs the National Energy Dominance Council, established by President Donald Trump to streamline U.S. energy production, and Mr. Papastavrou discussed energy developments affecting both nations.
The Greek government's decision to welcome Chevron's investment is part of its strategy to attract international energy players, enhance energy security, and establish Greece as a key energy hub in the Eastern Mediterranean.
