A government delegation visited Zakynthos to unveil a comprehensive development plan valued at €370 million.
The visit, part of the National Strategy for Regional and Local Development, focused on significant infrastructure improvements and funding allocations.
A key highlight of the visit was the announcement of the transfer of management of the iconic Navagio Beach to the Municipality of Zakynthos.
Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister, Thanasis Kontogeorgis, stated that revenue from the beach's tourism operations will primarily benefit the local community, with portions allocated to environmental agencies and the Ministry of Finance.
Restoration works, overseen by the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF), are expected to begin in early 2025.
Beyond the Navagio Beach transfer, the government unveiled plans for infrastructure improvements, including port deepening, waste management enhancements, and other essential initiatives. Additionally, a series of financial grants totaling €20 million was announced for local projects and initiatives.
HRADF will also update the Master Plan and conduct the Strategic Environmental Impact Study (SEIS) for the port deepening project, which will commence immediately. A request for licensing a floating marina was submitted, aiming for operation by summer.
In terms of healthcare and agriculture, new job openings were announced for medical and nursing staff at Zakynthos General Hospital.
Blocked tax identification numbers for local agricultural cooperatives were also released, allowing them to resume operations. New slaughterhouses are planned for the municipality.
The government presented its overall plan for waste management, highlighting ongoing projects and future initiatives. EYDAP, the Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company, is developing studies on water management for the island, with cost estimates for necessary interventions to follow.
Local officials, including the MP, mayor, regional governor, and other stakeholders, welcomed the government delegation.
They expressed gratitude for the government's efforts in addressing long-standing issues and praised the comprehensive development plan.
The visit marked a significant step towards revitalizing Zakynthos and addressing its development challenges.
The announced initiatives, coupled with government support and local collaboration, are expected to have a positive impact on the island's future.
