Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Sunday plans to broaden the ‘My Home’ program, aiming to alleviate the nation’s housing shortage and assist more prospective homeowners.
Mr. Mitsotakistold a news conference he was in talks with European authorities to secure funding for the expansion of the ‘My Home’ program.
The government’s goal is to extend the initiative to 2 billion euros and include older prospective homeowners aged up to 50.
“While an official announcement cannot be made at this moment pending negotiations,” Mitsotakis said, “I am cautiously optimistic about the program’s prospects.”
He praised the programmes success until now.
“I often meet couples, our young citizens, who tell me they are moving into their homes, acquiring property with a mortgage payment that is lower than renting a comparable house,” Mr. Mitsotakis said.
The Prime Minister also addressed the issue of Airbnb, noting that the current situation is under review, and restrictions are being considered for the total number of days per year properties can be rented out in areas with acute housing shortages.
“These are significant interventions that reduce the cost of housing and represent, I would say, the mosaic of a comprehensive policy designed to tackle a problem that is, as I told you, the flip side of development,” Mr. Mitsotakis said.
“When the economy was in tatters and properties had no value, the issue of housing did not concern us. Now, as the economy grows and properties gain greater value, the other side of this positive development is that we must make such interventions to facilitate our citizens who are renting.”
