Greece is "at the center of international interest, especially because of its participation in the United Nations Organization's Security Council in 2025-2026, following its nearly unanimous acceptance by the General Assembly," Foreign Affairs Minister George Gerapetritis told journalists on Monday.
Gerapetritis outlined his meetings at the UN, starting with his counterparts from Western Balkan countries and counterparts from Friends of the Western Balkans.
Greece always supported the inclusion of Western Balkans in the European Union, he said, and continues to support this prospect. "We are trying to find ways towards a dynamic for (EU) enlargement, particularly because Europe is at a crossroads of tremendous challenges - challenges that relate to defense, devleopment, the European Union's competitive position globally. For this reason, Europe needs to remain strong, powerful, united, and enlarged," the Greek minister underlined.
This European prospect must remain consistently active, Gerapetritis said, adding that he had stressed this during his meeting with the Friends of the Western Balkans and later with his one-on-one meeting with North Macedonia's FM Mucunski.
Respecting International Law is a condition for Europe to remain a pillar of support globally, he said, adding that "there should be no selective implementation of international treaties."
Concluding his statement so the press, the Greek FM said, "Greece will remain a pioneer in the efforts to enlarge Europe. We are the strong point of stability in the Balkans and in the East Mediterranean. We will continue to be so. International Law will continue to guide us, and our emphasis will always be on this."
