Adonis Georgiadis, Greece’s Minister of Health, launched a scathing attack on leftist Syriza leader Stefanos Kasselakis over delaying to disclose his financial wealth.
Speaking to a local broadcaster, Mr. Georgiadis questioned why Mr. Kasselakis has yet to submit his wealth details or else “pothen esches.”
“We are discussing this issue and trying to hold him accountable. Why doesn’t he disclose it? Because he wants to hide something, it’s that simple,” said Mr. Georgiadis.
The minister criticised the law’s lack of foresight for a scenario where a “tourist becomes the head of the opposition” – a broadswipe against the leftist leader.
Mr. Kasselakis has defended his position, stating that although he has been the leader since September, he is entitled to disclose his financial records, as everyone else here, by June 30th.
Mr. Georgiadis slammed Mr. Kasselakis for defying his promised to disclose his finances ahead of the European elections, now insisting he will do so later.
“A clear sky fears no lightning,” Mr. Georgiadis said. “Obviously, he doesn’t want us to see something:
“Does he have a lot of money? Less than he claims? Are his assets separate from his father’s in the tax office?” Mr. Georgiadis quipped.
He predicted Mr. Kasselakis will disclose his personal wealth after the European elections.
“But by then,” Mr. Gergiadis said, “ it will not matter.”
The controversy underscores the ongoing debate over transparency and accountability in Greek politics.
