Defying te state’s to defer May Day celebrations by a week, Greek workers plan to take to the streets on Wednesday, bringing the country to a standstill and causing major transport disruptions.
The General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) and the Civil Servants’ Confederation (ADEDY) are calling on all workers, pensioners, and the unemployed to participate in a 24-hour general strike for Labor Day on Wednesday, May 1st.
The strike will hit transport the hardest, with rolling work stoppages scheduled throughout the day.
Ships will remain docked, spoiling travel plans for thousands of Easter vacationers across the country, after the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation decided on Monday to join in the 24-hour labour strike .
The strikes coincide with a peak outbound traffic period as Greeks traditionally leave Athens and other major cities to celebrate Easter.
