Greece’s tourism ministry is on high alert following the bankruptcy filing by the FTI Group, a major tour operator that has brought at least 7,500 foreign tourists to Greece.

The FTI Group’s bankruptcy has raised concerns among the tourism industry, but assurances have been made that the vacations of tourists will not be disrupted.

Giannis Hatzis, President of the Hellenic Hotel Federation (POX) and First Vice-President of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), said there were about 7,500 tourists in some 250 hotels across the country.

“We understand the concern of our colleagues and recommend calm. We are closely monitoring the situation and expect to have a clearer picture soon.”

Sources indicate that the 7,500 visitors will return to their places of residence upon completing their planned vacations.

Michalis Vlatakis, President of the Association of Tourist and Travel Agencies of Crete, speaking to Cretalive, revealed that “there are several foreign visitors on the island at this time, and our primary concern is their safe return.”

Last year, Crete welcomed 150,000 visitors through FTI, with 80,000 expected this year, likely to arrive through other agencies.

Stakeholders emphasise that the tourists’ holidays will not be affected by the international tour operator’s bankruptcy filing.
