Public health experts are warning of a potential surge in viral infections as schools reopen across Greece. With respiratory illnesses already affecting thousands of citizens, the return to classrooms is expected to accelerate the spread of viruses, particularly among children.
Dimitris Paraskevis, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Athens and a member of the National Public Health Organization (EODY), emphasized that children are particularly vulnerable due to their lower immunity and increased contact in enclosed spaces.
He stressed the importance of vaccinations and preventive measures to protect vulnerable populations.
While the peak of the current wave remains uncertain, January is anticipated to be a challenging month, with increased circulation of influenza, COVID-19, and other common infections like gastroenteritis. Of particular concern is a resurgence of pertussis (whooping cough), which has already claimed the lives of two infants in Greece.
Theodora Psaltopoulou, another epidemiology professor at the University of Athens, highlighted the dangers of pertussis and attributed its resurgence to lower vaccination rates and waning immunity.
She urged vigilance and proactive measures, including mask-wearing in appropriate settings, timely medical consultations, and antiviral medications when necessary.
Scientists are also monitoring a recent uptick in mpox (monkeypox) cases in Greece. This viral disease, spread through close contact, can cause fever, rash, and other symptoms.
Preventive measures include avoiding contact with infected individuals, seeking medical attention if symptoms arise, and getting vaccinated.
Yannis Tountas, an emeritus professor of social and preventive medicine, linked the increase in viral infections to global factors such as climate change and increased international travel.
"The warming of the planet creates conditions that favor the spread of viruses," he noted.
As Greece faces this surge in infections, experts are calling for a multi-pronged approach, including public education, preventive measures, and robust healthcare interventions to mitigate the risks and protect public health.
