Environment Minister Theodoros Skylakakis announced stricter measures to combat illegal construction on the island of Mykonos, while also outlining plans to streamline building permits under the new zoning regulations.

Speaking on Monday, Mr. Skylakakis emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling unauthorized developments and ensuring compliance with environmental and urban planning laws.

“In recent weeks, illegal construction has resurfaced in Mykonos,” Mr. Skylakakis said. “To address this, we have already launched a tender and will soon obtain satellite images of the island from January 2024. Every illegal structure will be identified, and inspectors will be deployed to enforce the law. Those who build illegally after January 1, 2024, will face severe penalties, including demolition and fines.”

The minister also addressed concerns about delays in building permits due to a recent Council of State (Supreme Administrative Court) decision affecting thousands of applications.

“The new zoning regulations impact fewer permits than initially estimated, but we are working closely with the Council of State to minimize disruptions and ensure that legitimate projects can proceed without significant delays,” he said.

Mr. Skylakakis highlighted the importance of the new two-tier electricity pricing system, aimed at reducing energy costs and promoting renewable energy use.

“The two-tier system lowers prices during peak solar energy production hours, which is crucial for efficiency. During spring and summer, we often waste excess solar energy at midday. By shifting demand to these hours, consumers can benefit from lower rates, and we can optimize energy use,” he explained.

The minister’s announcements come amid growing concerns over unchecked development in popular tourist destinations like Mykonos, where illegal construction has often overshadowed environmental preservation efforts.

The deployment of inspectors and the use of satellite technology mark a significant step toward stricter enforcement and transparency.

The new measures are part of the government’s broader strategy to balance economic growth with sustainable development. By cracking down on illegal construction and promoting energy efficiency, Greece aims to protect its natural resources while supporting responsible tourism and infrastructure projects.
