An 87-year-old British pensioner has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after trying to suffocate his wife with a pillow.
The pensioner, identified as George Thompson, was appearing before an Athens prosecutor on Monday following the incident, which occurred early Sunday in his flat in Paleo Faliro.
Authorities said a neighbor called the police after Mr. Thompson sought her help.
Mr. Thompson reportedly believed his wife, Peryl Thompson, wanted to end her life due to her deteriorating health and severe dementia, which had left her bed bound for years. However, his attempt to fulfil her wish failed.
“He couldn't do it,” said a senior police official. “He just barely went to cover her, and his wife fell unconscious. He then ran to get help from his neighbour.”
Mrs. Thompson was immediately taken to a local state hospital where she is recovering. The couple had retired in Greece decades ago, according to neighbors.
The incident has raised questions about the challenges faced by elderly individuals and their families in caring for loved ones with dementia.
As the population ages, cases of elder abuse and neglect are becoming increasingly prevalent.
