A 34-year-old Egyptian woman endured nearly two months of horrific abuse at the hands of a 39-year-old compatriot while staying at the Malakasa migrant reception center, police revealed Monday.
The victim, who was repeatedly beaten, raped, and tortured—even having her nails ripped out—finally escaped and reported the crimes to authorities, leading to the suspect’s arrest.
The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, told police that the 39-year-old man, described as a “human trafficker,” subjected her to relentless violence and death threats against herself and her child. She alleged that he beat her, pulled her hair, and removed clumps of it, while also tearing out her fingernails.
On November 15, 2023, the victim could no longer endure the abuse and requested to leave the Malakasa facility.
She was transferred to a Doctors of the World shelter in central Athens. However, the suspect allegedly continued to threaten her, warning her not to reveal the abuse.
On January 31, 2024, the woman found the courage to report the crimes at the Omonia Police Station, accompanied by an interpreter.
She later provided additional testimony at the Oropos Police Station, where officers launched an investigation.
The 39-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including repeated rape, violence against a vulnerable person, and illegal weapon possession. He was remanded into custody after being handcuffed at the Oropos station.
The case has sparked outrage and renewed calls for better protection of vulnerable individuals in migrant reception centers.
Authorities are investigating whether the suspect was part of a larger trafficking network.
The victim is now receiving medical and psychological support, while police have assured her safety as the investigation continues.
