The Aegean island of Serifos has been under a water emergency for four consecutive months, underscoring the severity of the situation.
In the North Aegean, Thasos is actively drilling new wells to address the escalating demand, while Agathonisi in the Dodecanese is heavily reliant on costly desalination units.
Crete is also witnessing a dire situation, particularly in Platanias, Hania, where emergency conditions have been implemented due to the critical need for irrigation water to support local agriculture.
Mainland Greece is not spared from the crisis. The municipality of Polygyros in Central Macedonia has made an urgent plea to residents and visitors to exercise water conservation and refrain from wasteful practices.
In response to the deepening water crisis, scientists are advocating for more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable water management solutions.
With at least 14 areas across Greece already declared in a state of emergency, the government faces mounting pressure to implement long-term solutions to avert future crises and ensure a secure water supply for all affected regions.
