Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced Kimberly Guilfoyle as his choice for the next U.S. ambassador to Greece.
The announcement, made via Mr. Trump’s Truth Social platform, highlighted Ms. Guilfoyle’s diverse expertise in law, media, and politics.
Calling her a "close friend and ally," Mr. Trump lauded her leadership and intellect as essential assets for fostering stronger defense ties, boosting trade relations, and driving economic innovation between the U.S. and Greece.
Ms. Guilfoyle, known for her high-profile career as a former prosecutor in San Francisco and host on Fox News, has been an influential conservative voice.
Her previous role as a senior fundraiser for Mr. Trump’s campaign further solidified her prominence within Republican circles.
Additionally, her personal ties include a past engagement to Mr. Donald Trump Jr., which ended recently.
This nomination aligns with Mr. Trump’s tendency to appoint trusted associates and family affiliates to critical diplomatic roles. Notably, in November, he named Charles Kushner, the father of Jared Kushner, as ambassador to France.
Mr. Kushner’s controversial past, which includes serving prison time for fraud before receiving a pardon from Mr. Trump, underscored the former president’s unconventional approach to such appointments. Similarly, Tom Barrack, a close confidant, was named ambassador to Turkey despite legal scrutiny, including a 2021 indictment for unregistered lobbying for the UAE, from which he was acquitted in 2022.
Ms. Guilfoyle’s anticipated appointment signifies a continuation of Mr. Trump’s distinctive diplomatic reshaping, as he lays groundwork for a potential return to the presidency in January 2025.
Her experience and connections are expected to play a pivotal role in advancing U.S. interests in the Eastern Mediterranean, a region of increasing strategic importance.
