Greek authorities are confronting a significant surge in domestic violence cases, with the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrisochoidis, revealing that arrests related to such incidents have reached 1,000 in May alone.
Speaking to local radio Skai, Mr. Chrisochoidis highlighted a worrying 60% increase in domestic violence complaints over the past year. He emphasised the growing willingness of victims to come forward.
“More individuals are now speaking up, and women, in particular, are reporting the abuse they have endured.”
The minister underscored the government’s commitment to safeguarding victims, saying that “secure accommodations are available, known only to the victims, providing a safe haven when needed.” He also noted the widespread installation of panic buttons as a measure to enhance victim support, resulting in a substantial number of new complaints each week.
Addressing the recent attack on environmental volunteers in Parnitha, Mr. Chrisochoidis said authorities were close to apprehending the culprits, ensuring that they will face justice.
Additionally, Mr. Chrisochoidis announced additional financial assistance for frontline police officers, a measure due to take force in June. This initiative aims to support first responders who are often the initial point of contact in managing incidents.
In a move to increase transparency and accountability within the police force, the minister also disclosed an ongoing tender for 4,000 body cameras to be equipped by officers on duty.
