National Defense Minister Nikos Dendias described the review of upper-level ranks in the Armed Forces "a logical step" towards the new structure of the military, in statements in Patras on Friday.
Dendias had requested the review in all three branches of the Armed Forces through Chief of Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General Dimitrios Choupis.
"The reviews look like they are extraordinary, but in reality they are a logical step, following the decision for the merger of military camps and units and the new Armed Forces structure, which went through Parliament and was approved by the Government Council on National Security (KYSEA)," the minister said.
Referring to the plan for the restructuring of the Armed Forces, he added, "The Hellenic Armed Forces suffer from (a sort of) hydrocephaly, which is entirely incompatible with Agenda 2030, or, to give an example, the Greek army cannot possibly have more top-level officials than the American one, which is 20 times larger. As it cannot possibly also have more military camps. Therefore, in the framework of Agenda 2030, there must be a rationalization, and this had to take place the soonest possible in order to move ahead to the next steps of modernizing the Armed Forces."
