The Cyclades islands have been battered by severe weather, including heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and hailstorms, causing widespread flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage, particularly in Paros, Mykonos, and Syros.
Torrential rain turned streets into rivers in Paros, sweeping away vehicles and triggering landslides that disrupted traffic.
Mykonosς was hit by severe flooding, with overwhelmed drainage systems submerging parts of the island. Syros saw strong hailstorms, adding to the weather-related chaos.
Meteorologists recorded exceptionally high rainfall, with Mykonos receiving 71.6mm of rain by Monday night, 65mm of which fell in just two hours.
Other islands, including Tinos, Thasos, and Skopelos, also reported heavy downpours.
The Greek Fire Department responded to 160 emergency calls, 100 from Mykonos and 60 from Paros, carrying out water pump operations and evacuating stranded residents.
Reinforcements were sent from neighboring islands to assist in rescue and recovery efforts.
Due to the severe damage, schools on Mykonos and Paros will remain closed Tuesday. As a precaution, classes were also suspended in Rhodes, Kos, and Symi. Officials warn of potential additional closures.
Weather experts predict the storm will intensify, moving towards the Dodecanese islands and the mainland, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected in regions including Attica, Macedonia, and Thessaloniki.
Authorities urge residents in affected areas to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel as the extreme weather persists.
