Greek Coast Guard has discovered the body of an unidentified man off a beach northeast of Athens with a 10-kilogram (22-pound) barbell attached to his leg with a rope, according to officials.

The body, which was spotted by a local diver near the town of Marathon, was retrieved about 100 meters (328 feet) from the coastline. It was attached to a 10-kilogram (22-pound) barbell by a rope tied around the man’s leg, raising immediate concerns among law enforcement officials.

The Coast Guard responded to the alert promptly, and an ambulance was called to the scene. The man was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, where an autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of death.

The deceased, estimated to be between 40-45 years old, had been in the water for several days, according to the preliminary investigation. The port authorities at Rafina, overseeing the case, are working closely with the homicide department to unravel the circumstances of the man’s death.

Schinias beach, known for its crystal-clear waters and as a popular destination for both locals and tourists, became the center of a potential criminal investigation. Police are now awaiting identification, which they believe will be a significant step in solving this case.

As the investigation continues, questions linger as to whether this was an accident or foul play.
