Greeks will be paying more for their Christmas dinner this year due to rising food prices. According to a new report, the average cost of a festive meal for 6-8 people will range from €107.54 to €148.89, a 4.3% to 5.8% increase compared to 2023.

The Institute of Commerce and Services of the Hellenic Confederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship (IN.EM.Y.-ESEE) conducted the study, which analyzed data from supermarkets and specialized food stores. The price range reflects variations in product quality and sourcing.

The report notes that traditional Greek Christmas treats like "melomakarona" and "kourabiedes" were included in the cost analysis, even though they are not part of the government's "festive basket" program, which offers discounts on essential holiday items.

Despite the increased cost, consumers will have the opportunity to shop for their Christmas meals this Sunday, as all stores and supermarkets will be open. However, stores will be closed on Christmas Day and December 26th.

This news comes as no surprise to many Greeks who have been feeling the pinch of inflation in recent months.

While the holiday spirit remains strong, families may need to adjust their budgets to accommodate the higher cost of this year's Christmas dinner.
