A deadly shipwreck involving migrants has occurred south of Gavdos, resulting in the tragic loss of life and the rescue of numerous individuals.

The Hellenic Coast Guard confirmed that the body of a man has been recovered 21 nautical miles south of the island, while 97 people were successfully brought to safety.

The rescue operation was launched after a vessel carrying migrants sank in the open sea.

The Coast Guard deployed multiple vessels, including lifeboats, to the scene to assist the survivors and search for any missing persons.

A Navy helicopter was also dispatched to support the efforts.

The body of the deceased individual is being transported to the port of Kaloi Limenes for further identification.

Meanwhile, search operations remain ongoing as authorities continue to scour the area for additional survivors or victims.

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing dangers faced by migrants who embark on perilous sea journeys in search of a better life.
