Former Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis has called on current Mayor Harris Doukas to delegate his responsibilities to a deputy while he runs for the PASOK leadership.
During Wednesday's city council meeting, Mr. Bakoyannis expressed concerns about the risks of a leadership vacuum in Athens, highlighting the demanding nature of managing the city. He urged Mr. Doukas to transfer his duties to ensure effective administration during his candidacy.
“Since you have officially announced your candidacy and are unable to fully perform your duties, please transfer all responsibilities to a deputy mayor until the internal party elections are concluded,” Mr. Bakoyannis said.
“This will allow you to remain as mayor while ensuring the city continues to operate effectively.”
Mr. Doukas responded sharply.
"I understand Mr. Bakoyannis has a significant interest in PASOK's internal processes," he said "Your interest is so great, Mr. Bakoyannis, that you even write articles about it. I suggest it would be much more beneficial to write about issues concerning Athens."
Mr. Doukas continued, criticising Mr. Bakoyannis' tenure as mayor.
"We don't engage in 'Walks' with the known outcomes, Mr. Bakoyannis. We are out every day solving problems. From schools, which were neglected under your administration and are now being renovated, to playgrounds you inaugurated without proper certification, and to street cleanliness—don't lecture us."
Mr. Doukas emphasized his commitment to democratic processes and his daily efforts for the city.
"I participate in democratic procedures as I should, and no one has the right to criticize my political beliefs or the campaign I am running. I am here every day, fighting for the municipality with passion.
We must all take responsibility for our words and actions."
