Audit Finds Gaps in Greece's UNESCO Heritage Management

Greece lacks a structured and effective system for managing its UNESCO World Heritage sites, according to a new report.

The Court of Audit found that while Greece has 19 cultural sites on the UNESCO list, only three have an approved management plan.

Additionally, no natural landmarks are included on the list.

The audit identified shortcomings such as fragmented oversight, lack of coordination among authorities, and inadequate monitoring.

It also found that multiple regional and municipal bodies submit heritage site nominations without consulting the Ministry of Culture.

The report recommends that Greece align with UNESCO’s standards, establish a centralized management body, and ensure proper allocation of revenue from archaeological sites.
