Athens officially welcomed the holiday season with the lighting of its Christmas tree in Syntagma Square. Mayor Haris Doukas presided over the event, unveiling a 20-meter fir adorned with recycled decorations and LED lights, symbolizing sustainability.
This year's festive theme draws from classic fairy tales, transforming the square into a whimsical scene with elves and beloved characters like the Nutcracker. The tree, sourced from Halkidiki, will later be repurposed by the Athens School of Fine Arts for student art projects.
Details of the city's Christmas events will be announced soon.
