Athens has triumphed over major global cities to be named the "World's Leading Cultural City Destination" at the prestigious World Travel Awards (WTA) 2024.
The Greek capital beat out 14 other contenders, including London, Paris, New York, and Rome, to secure the coveted title at the Grand Final Gala Ceremony held in Madeira, Portugal.
The victory underscores Athens' growing prominence as a global cultural hub, recognized for its rich heritage and unique experiences.
"We are very proud of this award, which demonstrates that Athens is a powerful global brand in culture," said Athens Mayor Haris Doukas.
He emphasized the municipality's commitment to further strengthening the city's cultural offerings through investments in events and initiatives that connect residents and visitors with Athens' rich past and present.
Ioannis Georgizas, CEO of the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency (ADDMA), accepted the award on behalf of the city.
"This international distinction is a result of systematic work towards the city's extroversion," he remarked, highlighting ADDMA's efforts to showcase Athens' competitive advantages in the global tourism market.
The WTA, established in 1993, recognize excellence in the travel, tourism, and hospitality sectors. Winners are determined by votes from travel professionals and the public.
