Greek politician Mr. Apostolos Tzitzikostas has been confirmed as the new EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism following a decisive vote in the European Parliament.

Mr. Tzitzikostas’ nomination was approved with 39 out of 44 votes after an extensive three-hour hearing, where he outlined his priorities and responded confidently to questions from members of the Parliament's Transport and Tourism Committee.

During the session, Mr. Tzitzikostas emphasized his commitment to EU transport safety regulations, noting that last year’s tragic rail accident in Greece had strengthened his resolve to enforce EU laws effectively.

According to Politico, MEPs from major political groups, including the European People’s Party, the Greens, and the European Conservatives and Reformists, expressed their support, indicating satisfaction with his performance and responses.

While most political groups backed his nomination, the new far-right faction Europe of Nations and Freedom, which includes Germany's AfD, voted against it. Additionally, the European Left opted to abstain.

The Chair of the Transport and Tourism Committee, ND MEP Ms. Eliza Vozemberg, praised the fairness and transparency of the process.

Writing on social media platform X, she stated, “The confirmation hearing for Commissioner-designate for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Mr. Tzitzikostas, was completed officially. I am pleased to say the process was transparent and democratic, with all members respecting the procedures.”
