Anna Diamantopoulou, a candidate for the presidency of the socialist Pasok party, has, criticized the government's economic policies during a recent visit to Chios.
She pointed out that despite the government's hype over rates of unemployment dropping below 10 percent, Greece retains the second-highest jobless rate in the European Union.
Ms. Diamantopoulou challenged the narrative of economic success, highlighting that over half of private sector employees earn up to 800 euros per month, while 70 percent earn up to 950 euros. She also noted that only one in ten employees earn more than 1,450 euros, and youth unemployment remains alarmingly high at over 22 percent.
"If I were in the Prime Minister's position, I would not be celebrating these numbers," Diamantopoulou stated. She called for a reevaluation of Greece's economic model and urged an open discussion about the sectors that should drive the Greek economy by 2030.
She posed critical questions: Should Greece focus on real estate or technology? Should it aim to be an exporting nation or one reliant on imports?
Ms. Diamantopoulou argued for a clear answer, advocating for a Greece that produces more and does not settle for mediocrity.
Ms. Diamantopoulou also addressed the need to restructure the ferry services, citing the high costs for citizens and the lack of quality services as pressing issues.
