Archaeologists in Israel have unearthed a remarkable mosaic floor bearing an ancient Greek inscription at the site of a Byzantine monastery.
The mosaic, which dates back to the 5th or 6th century CE, features the phrase "Blessed are you when you come in and blessed are you when you go out," a Biblical passage expressing blessings for those who follow God's commandments.
The discovery was made in Kiryat Gat, located in southern Israel. Mark Avrahami, head of the conservation team, described the mosaic as one of the rarest ever found in Israel.
It will soon be transferred for preservation and eventually displayed to the public.
The mosaic floor is adorned with intricate designs, including images of lions, doves, geometric patterns, flowers, crosses, and a ceramic vessel. It was uncovered during development works for a new neighborhood, revealing the remains of the Byzantine monastery built upon an earlier Roman settlement.
Excavations at the site have also unearthed various structures, including a winepress, a storage facility, and evidence of a large ceramics workshop. Numerous artifacts have been recovered, including Gaza amphorae used for transporting wine and olive oil, small glass vessels, and a rare ceramic amphora depicting a human face.
Experts believe the early Roman settlement was strategically located, serving as an important hub for the surrounding areas.
The discovery of the monastery and its exquisite mosaic floor provides valuable insights into the history and cultural exchange in the region during the Byzantine period.
