Greek authorities have successfully prevented a sophisticated €4.5 million scam aimed at a US health clinic, thanks to the use of advanced AI detection software.

The scam involved the use of artificial intelligence to mimic the voice of the clinic's CEO in order to deceive the accounting department into authorizing a large transfer of funds.

The elaborate scheme was uncovered after the US clinic became suspicious and alerted the FBI, triggering an international warning.

This prompted Greece's anti-money laundering authority to swiftly track the funds to a Thessaloniki-based business owned by a foreign national. The account was frozen before the scammer could access the money.

This incident highlights the growing threat of AI-powered cybercrime and the importance of international cooperation in combating such sophisticated schemes.

While no arrests have been made yet, the successful interception of the fraudulent transfer demonstrates the effectiveness of Greece's anti-money laundering measures and its commitment to protecting businesses from cyber threats.
