Far right European Mps proved to be unlikely allies of the leftist Greek prime minister.
Nigel Farage, former City trader and co-chairman of the far-right EFDD group, claimed that “the European project has started to die.” “The plan has failed” he said further adding that “the whole of the Mediterranean finds itself in the wrong currency. There is a new Berlin Wall and it is called the euro”
“Mr Tsipras, your country should never have joined the euro, I think you acknowledge that.”
He praised the Greek government for calling a referendum against the “bullies” in Brussels, “these years of austerity never worked. You called that referendum … When one of your predecessors tried the same, the bullies of Europe removed him.”
“Your moment has come. And frankly, if you have the courage, you should lead your people out of the eurozone with your head held high.”
Marine Le Pen leader of the extreme-right anti-euro and anti-migrant French FN party also claimed that the single currency was a decisive factor which led Greece to a financial meltdown.
“Mr Tsipras, euro and austerity are siamese twins, they are attached at the hip. I think that in a concerted fashion, Greece must negotiate its way out of the euro.”
The euro is not irreversible. The euro is not for ever.”
“After s many mistakes have been made, it’s high time to have a concerted dismantling of the euro. And the countries in the eurogroup will go better and the tensions will be diminished.”
